About CITADEL Coatings in Australia

Technology

Citadel has always passionately led the floor coating industry with our innovative Polyurea technologies.

Thanks to our almost complete focus on research and development, we are able to create floor coatings with lower VOCs and more adjustable cure rates than anything our competitors can even come close to. Our constant and passionate research worldwide brings us to the cutting edge of floor coatings technology.

This page will explain what makes Citadel’s product stronger, more durable and better value than any other product on the market.

Durability of Citadel’s Polyurea

Citadel’s Polyurea is an extremely durable product, which was developed for and will withstand both ordinary and extraordinary wear and tear.

  • Due to its chemical makeup and structure, Citadel’s Polyurea creates a very strong bond with concrete and has the ability to expand and contract with change in the surface and underlying ground temperature.  This means there is no chipping, cracking or hot tire pick-up. Hot tire pick-up occurs when a car’s tires are hot from driving; the heat and pressure from the tires may melt or peel the paint or coating, separating it from the floor.
  • Citadel’s Polyurea maintains its color and does not fade or yellow when exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Citadel’s Polyurea is a ‘tough’ surface resistant to scratching, water, salt, oils and other chemicals one might find in a garage or in a vehicle.

Environmentally “Green” Coating: Low VOCs and Odour

Citadel’s Polyurea contains low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and produces no toxic fumes during the application process.
Typical Epoxy systems, on the other hand, produce clouds of toxic fumes for many hours after application.  These fumes are dangerous to people installing the coating as well as people and pets in the general vicinity. VOCs emit greenhouse gases and are suspected to be a carcinogen.

The US EPA regulation for concrete protective coatings’ VOCs is set at 400 g/L. Polyurea have near-zero VOCs and fulfill the Federal Government’s 2010 VOC requirements.  However, different regions have their own regulations for VOCs.

Regulations will only get stricter in the future. Products with low or zero VOCs are in a good position to stay on the market and attract environmentally conscious consumers.

U.S. Green Building Council

Citadel is proud to be a part of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Citadel is proud to be a part of the U.S. Green Building Council. This is a non-profit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for the United States through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings.

USGBC is a community of member companies and organizations of all sizes, in every sector of the industry. They and their employees drive everything we do as we work toward green buildings for everyone within a generation.

USGBC members represent the best organizations from all fields. They and their employees drive everything we do as USGBC work toward green buildings for everyone within a generation. The members of USGBC are local and international, big and small, mission and market-driven.

They make an impact within their sphere of influence and collectively advance the movement for a more sustainable built environment.

With All these Positives, are there any Negatives?

The main drawback of Polyurea resins is the relatively high cost of the materials.

However, as described above Polyurea are a much more advanced polymer and offer numerous performance benefits including cure time.  The cost factor is often offset by the amount of time, labor and related downtime costs associated with other polymer based coatings.

This is especially important for commercial applications
where a company may need to shut down business while the floor coating is installed. When homeowners install a Polyurea floor coating in residential garages, they will not need temporary storage for their items kept in the garage like they would need if using other slower-curing polymer coatings.

Occupational Health and Safety

As a concrete flooring company, many of our potential clients would be in industries that require safe flooring.
Whether it is a hospital, school or food industry flooring, we have a solution.

Slip resistance

Flooring without slip resistance can prove to be very unsafe and result in very serious consequences.
To eliminate this risk, Citadel offers safe and affordable solutions. We have many systems that increase the coefficient of friction (COF), therefore making it much harder to slip.

Our Non-Slip aggregates are available from 240 grit to 40 grit, so no matter the spec we can achieve the right amount of COF. These options conform to all OHSA slip requirements.

Anti-Microbial Additive

Citadel® is the first polyurea floor coatings manufacture in the world that offer the option of adding Anti-Microbial additives at the time of manufacture.

Anti-Microbial is a silver ion technology which reduces bacteria, mould and fungi, helping to prevent the risk of cross contamination and therefore this is ideal for any hygienic environment. Being incorporated at the time of manufacture, it provides continuous protection and will not leach from the surface or be wiped off or washed away, providing a lifetime protection for the floor.

Floor coatings incorporating Antimicrobials are ideal for any hygienic environment requiring a protected floor such as:

  • Hospitals
  • Laboratories
  • Kitchens
  • Schools
  • Gyms
  • Public Offices
  • Bathroom
